How can I ensure maximum operational savings?
+

As part of your initial enquiry, we'll request a Stock Keeping Unit (SKU) count. This can be extracted from the data held on your POS system either by Sure, or you.

To ensure accuracy, we recommend one label per SKU - with a contingency of ~10% to accomodate the changes to your product range as both you and the market change naturally.

Using a SKU count allows you to track your return on investment like for like, which means you can request and implement any additional tweaks and changes in real time!

What should I know before I calculate my Return on Investment?
+

"We can save on average 8 hours per week, but sometimes , on promotion weeks that can actually be up to two days (per store)" ~ Graham Murdoch - IT Director @ CJ Lang & Son LTD

Every ROI calculation is different, but every ESL solution can expect:

  • 95% reduction in price label labour costs
  • 100% reduction in price label printing costs
  • 100% reduction in till price errors
  • Increased store colleague satisfaction

For Sure, CJ Lang Spar is a great example of just how quickly the admin from over 100 stores can be reduced to next to nothing.

This huge reduction in admin hours allows for happier, more friendly colleagues - with a lot more time to spend dedicated to the customer.

Furthermore - Spread your Capital Expenditure over 5 years by leasing the hardware with monthly repayments. That way you can more readily assess your monthly savings on the process of printing labels and having your team walk the store updating labels.

Will Solum Newton ESL work with my EPOS system?
+

In short- yes.

Solum Advanced Information Management System (AIMS) doesn't require any advanced processing to use data from your EPOS system, and it uses an open API to ensure absolute compatability.

If you have any questions about your integration, feel free to send us an email! Solum@sure.uk.com

How does Newton Pro ESL impact energy consumption?
+

The world is in the midst of an ongoing energy crisis, with rising costs and increasing pressure on supply — and there’s no quick fix in sight. That’s why the Solum Newton range of electronic shelf labels (ESLs) has been designed to go beyond pricing automation: it helps reduce plastic waste, cut paper usage, and support retailers in progressing toward carbon neutrality.

But today, sustainability isn’t just a moral responsibility — it’s becoming a legal expectation.

How Energy Legislation Is Evolving

New regulations, like the EU Omnibus Directive (Expained in detail below), have already prompted many European retailers to switch to ESL systems for transparency and efficiency. But this digital transformation also raises new questions — especially around energy use in stores.

In countries like Spain and Germany, governments have implemented energy curfews, limiting the use of illuminated or power-consuming digital signage after 10 PM to curb unnecessary energy consumption.

If similar restrictions were introduced in the UK, Solum Newton ESLs would easily comply. Their ultra-low power consumption — typically less than 0.5 kWh per 1,000 labels per year — means even the largest stores can operate them without concern.

Put simply: Solum ESLs don’t just help you stay competitive — they help you stay compliant.

What is the Omnibus Directive and how could it impact the UK Market?
+

What is the EU Omnibus Directive?

The EU Omnibus Directive is a major piece of consumer protection legislation that came into effect across EU member states in May 2022. Its goal is to modernize consumer rights — especially in the digital age — by increasing transparency, fairness, and accountability in how businesses communicate with customers.

Key Points:

  • If you advertise a discount, you must show the lowest price the product was sold for in the previous 30 days.
  • It’s now illegal to post or promote fake customer reviews — businesses must be clear about how reviews are collected and verified.
  • If prices are tailored based on browsing history or user data, you must clearly inform the customer.
  • Selling products that look identical across the EU but differ in quality or content is banned.

Failure to Comply:

EU member states define their own penalties for violating consumer rights laws. However, EU guidelines suggest that the maximum fines are either:

  • Upwards of 4% of the trader's annual turnover in the Member State(s) where the breach occurred.
  • Or at least €2 million if the trader's annual turnover cannot be determined.

What Does This Mean for the UK?

  • UK retailers trading with or within the EU must comply.
  • The UK is considering similar legislation to align with EU standards.
  • Consumers now expect greater transparency, even in domestic markets.
